Source
Phytase, a thermostable enzyme, is widely prevalent in nature, with its occurrence evident in plants, animals, and microorganisms. This extracellular enzyme is common in plant tissues such as germinated seeds, grains, legumes, and vegetables, as well as pollen. Interestingly, there are various microorganisms that produce phytase in nature, including fungi, bacteria, and molds. Together, all these sources are responsible for the production of this vital enzyme in the natural world.
Use
Phytase has gained widespread usage in pig, poultry, and fish feed as a feed additive. Its primary function is to release phosphorus in phosphate form, which has been evidenced by numerous studies. Additionally, phytase has the ability to enhance the availability of various nutrients. As a result, the feed industry frequently utilizes phytases from different sources either alone or in combination. This particular category of feed phytase has experienced tremendous growth, steadily increasing year after year. Research indicates that incorporating phytase into corn and soybean meal diets can improve phosphorus utilization by up to 60% and decrease phosphorus excretion in manure by 50%. In the case of broiler chickens fed with soybean cake, the addition of phytase to their feed leads to the release of approximately 50% of phytate phosphorus. Furthermore, supplementing phytase in corn-soybean meal diets for broilers enhances the intestinal structure by increasing the height of intestinal villi and mucosal thickness while reducing the depth of intestinal crypts. These changes optimize the intestinal structure, ultimately improving nutrient absorption in the small intestine.
